What Are Hair Growth Injections and How Do They Work?

Once we hit a certain age, glaring physical changes can become a concern. One of the more common concerns that people face is hair loss. There is a lineup of hair care products that claim to rejuvenate the scalp and bring back the hair from your youth. Normally our product options include brands like Propecia and Rogaine. However, there is clinical proof that there are more ways to restore hair loss! One of the most common treatments today is hair growth injections like PRP injections.

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) hair growth injections are a safe and effective treatment to reverse hair loss and increase overall hair growth. Hair growth injections are treatments used to target your scalp’s tissue and stimulate hair growth in the affected areas. This positively affects collagen, follicles, and cells that help to encourage hair growth and hopefully, prevent future hair loss.

This process is a treatment known to deter hair loss and thinning while encouraging new hair growth. Overall, the treatment has had a high success rate among many patients.

How Do Hair Growth Injections Work?

These hair growth injections are cutting edge in hair loss technology. They’re used for patients who are not only losing hair or trying to prevent more hair loss but even for patients that deal with alopecia areata

These hair growth injections normally contain a mixture of platelet-rich plasma, peptides, and vitamins along with a few microneedles to do the job.

Part of the medical community thinks that these hair growth injections can help to trigger natural growth. By increasing the blood supply to the hair follicle, it can maintain growth and thickness. PRP therapy has not only been used for hair growth, but for other problem areas like healing injured muscles, tendons, and ligaments since the 1980s.

Using platelet-rich plasma

Platelet-rich plasma is a growth factor that is formulated by taking a sample of your own blood. Then the platelets are separated from other blood components and reinjected into your scalp. This helps encourage new vessels being made and follicles to grow hair.

Intake of vitamins

Oftentimes, hair loss can be linked to vitamin deficiencies; specifically, Vitamin D and Vitamin B. Vitamin D helps to stimulate hair follicles, and vitamin B complexes like B7 and H (Biotin) help with hair strengthening and cellular regrowth.

Intake of peptides

Peptides like the copper peptide GHKCu are known to have the capabilities to be regenerative. Especially when it comes to aiding hair thickening and growth. It’s also capable of preventing DHT which is a follicle-harming hormone.

Microneedling follow-up

With hair growth injections, most treatments come followed up with microneedling. The tiny needles used to penetrate your skin helps to produce new collagen growth by creating new cells. This can also help with aiding hair growth.

Hair growth injections treatments

Your healthcare provider will go over your medical and family history to decide if hair growth injections are right for you.

Once your healthcare provider clears you for treatment, the procedure normally goes as follows: 3 treatments, 6 weeks apart for a total of 18 weeks. Each treatment may vary, depending on the patient and their needs/goals. Results after 6 months may look like stronger and thicker hair with less hair loss and increased hair growth.

During the time before your treatment, your healthcare provider will talk about certain parts of the treatment and its process. They will discuss how your hair growth treatments will be used for hair restoration. Also known as autologous PRP. This means it will only be extracted from the patient’s blood. Once the blood is drawn, typically through the arm, it is sent through a centrifugal process (a machine that spins the blood for about 10 minutes) which separates the liquid and solid components. At times, activators may be added like thrombin, collagen, and calcium. PRP is the solid component separated earlier from the blood and into three layers: platelet-poor plasma, platelet-rich plasma, and red blood cells.

From there, the treatment will resume by re-introducing the platelet-rich plasma drawn into the syringe and then injected directly into the affected areas of the scalp as small injections. Hair growth injections are sometimes combined with hair transplants for an even bigger result.

Conditions that hair growth injections can treat

These injections can help treat hair loss conditions like:

  • Alopecia Areata
